What goes into a good mix? Well, that depends on lots of things, including who it's for and why.

For the ANTIGENIUS EXCHANGE, Mr. Moscato has furnished us a purpose, (and hopefully soon, some tunage), but has left the format, and content up to the individual. How libertarian!

Music affects us all differently, and I, for one, am looking forward to hearing from some new minds through how, and with what they put together a mix or two, or more.

Tim and I have been swapping tunes for many years now, and it's been really interesting to see where our musical universes begin to overlap. He's exposed me to some fantastic stuff I wouldn't have found on my own. But as much as I love old Genesis, I will never get him to listen to the drummer who must not be named, as Tim's head would explode. Conversely, although I may come to appreciate Kanye West, I ain't buyin' his CD's.

First and foremost, I think anything you contribute to this project, must please
YOU. The mixes I've made that resonate the longest with me, are the ones
where, every piece of music on it is one I love. I've made good mixes specifically for someone else's enjoyment, that I can only listen to for so long, because there are always a couple songs I dropped in just for them.

Have fun with it. I listen to mixes on my ipod multiple times, make changes, put them away, combine them, deconstruct, reconstruct them. Whatever. Nobody's going to hear it until you're ready to commit it to CD. As Tim said, worst case you end up with a couple mixes you really like, as well as some coasters with other peoples music on them. No wait, that's not what he said.

As I send out music, I'll probably post a playlist, with albums, and notes here, and I encourage others to do the same. One thing I hate, is to get a mix with no information. I want to know what it is, so if I like it, I can go get more. If nothing else print your itunes screen (or whatever music program you use) and tuck it in with the CD.

Anyway, I don't think there ought to be a ton of rules. You want to make a theme mix about whale hunting; knock yourself out. Like Serbian Death Metal? Go for it. Songs by all the worst American Idol contestants...er, maybe I'll save that for my second mix.
